PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The MPD Foundation seeks proposals for Year 4 of the MPD Research Alliance, a collaborative multi-investigator, multi-year project focused on advancing the understanding of the myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs) and contributing to the rapid discovery and development of effective treatments.

It is the intention of the MPD Foundation to broaden participation in the MPD Research Alliance  to facilitate accelerated discovery of effective treatments for the MPDs.

Awards will start at $100,000 per year including up to 8% indirect costs. Awards may be larger based on the quality and potential impact of a proposal;  awards are renewable for additional years based on peer review by the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the MPD Foundation and on available funding.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

The following criteria will be used by the Scientific Advisory Board to evaluate proposals for the MPD Research Alliance:

  • Support for MPDRA goal.  Proposal should make a significant contribution to the Research Alliance’s primary goal, which is to identify, within the shortest time frame possible, candidates for targeted drugs for the Philadelphia chromosome negative myeloproliferative disorders for all MPD patients.  Proposal may support this goal through basic or translational research, either building on current JAK2 research or investigating other pathways, as long as the end result of that research will contribute to bringing effective treatments to MPD patients as quickly as possible.

  • Innovative approach.  Proposal should demonstrate an understanding of current science related to the MPDs, and should build on that science to help provide a direction for future research.  An innovative approach which provides such direction to all MPD researchers will be considered an advantage in evaluating the proposal.

  • Evidence of collaborative potential.  The MPD Foundation believes that active and meaningful collaboration among researchers will accelerate the development of treatments for the MPDs.  Preference will be given to proposals which demonstrate existing and planned collaboration between the researcher and his/her colleagues, and the potential for collaboration with current MPDRA investigators.

FUNDING LEVEL GUIDELINES

Proposals may request an annual amount up to $200,000, including up to 8% indirect costs.  Awards are anticipated to be in the range of $100,000 to $200,000 per year and will be renewable for one or two additional years based on satisfactory progress as determined through review by the MPD Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board and on available funding.
